Activity for a memory care resident who used to be a pilot
Purpose of the activity
This activity is designed to honor the life experiences of a resident who was a pilot. The primary goals are to provide a positive and engaging experience by tapping into long-term memory, validating their identity, and stimulating the senses. It encourages reminiscence, promotes a sense of competence and purpose, and offers a wonderful opportunity for one-on-one connection.
Materials needed
A large, easy-to-read world map or a map of a specific region the resident flew over.
Several model airplanes of different types (e.g., a propeller plane, a commercial jet, a biplane).
High-quality picture books or laminated photos of various aircraft, cockpits, and aerial landscapes.
Props such as a pilot's hat, aviator sunglasses, or a simple silk scarf.
A tablet or portable speaker to play sounds of airplane engines and gentle "takeoff" ambient noise.
Optional: A small globe to provide a three-dimensional perspective.
Optional: Travel-themed snacks like small bags of pretzels or peanuts and a beverage like ginger ale.
Estimated duration
20 to 30 minutes. Be prepared to end sooner if the resident shows signs of fatigue, overstimulation, or disinterest.
Ideal group size
This activity is best conducted one-on-one to provide personalized attention and avoid sensory overload. It could be adapted for a very small group of two or three residents if they share a common background and are at similar cognitive levels.
