Turn precious memories into a beautiful work of art. In this hands-on session, residents will begin creating their own memory collages using copies of their favorite photos. We will provide all the materials and guidance to help arrange a visual story of their life's journey.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to be more than just a craft project. It is an opportunity for residents to engage in meaningful reminiscence and life review. By curating photos and mementos, they create a tangible legacy piece that tells their unique story. The process encourages self-expression, supports cognitive function through planning and organization, and provides a wonderful platform for social connection as residents share stories and memories with one another.
Materials Needed
It is very important to communicate with residents in advance to ask them to bring 5-10 COPIES of their favorite photographs. Stress that they should not bring original, irreplaceable photos. Offer assistance with scanning and printing photos for any resident who needs it.
Base: Poster board, 11x14 or 16x20 inch canvas boards, or large pieces of heavy cardstock for each participant.
Adhesives: Non-toxic glue sticks and/or Mod Podge (matte finish is recommended) with small bowls or paper plates for distribution.
Applicators: Small foam brushes or paintbrushes for applying Mod Podge.
Cutting Tools: A variety of safety scissors, including some with decorative edges.
Decorative Papers: A wide assortment of scrapbook paper, colored construction paper, tissue paper, old maps, or sheet music.
Embellishments: Fabric scraps, ribbon, buttons, lace, stickers (letters, quotes, or images), stamps and ink pads, and other decorative items.
Writing Utensils: Fine-tipped permanent markers or gel pens for adding names, dates, and captions.
Setup Supplies: Protective tablecloths or newspaper for work surfaces, paper towels for cleanup, and optional aprons.
Inspiration: A completed sample collage to show residents what is possible.
Estimated Duration
90 to 120 minutes. This provides ample time for crafting, socializing, and sharing without feeling rushed.
Ideal Group Size
6 to 10 residents. A smaller group size allows for more meaningful conversation and ensures you can provide individual attention to everyone.
