Residents will form teams to decorate their own pre-baked shortcake bases using an array of fresh strawberries, whipped cream, and other sweet toppings like sprinkles or chocolate shavings. This friendly competition encourages teamwork, creativity, and a delicious reward at the end.

Purpose of the Activity

This activity is designed to provide a fun, multi-sensory experience that promotes social interaction and creative expression. It encourages teamwork and friendly competition in a relaxed environment. The hands-on nature of decorating can help maintain fine motor skills, while the familiar flavors and smells of strawberry shortcake may evoke positive memories and conversations. Above all, it offers a joyful opportunity for residents to create and enjoy a delicious treat together.

Materials Needed

Shortcake Bases: One per resident, plus a few extras. Pre-made sponge cakes, angel food cake slices, or sweet biscuits work well.
Fresh Strawberries: Washed, hulled, and ready for slicing or mashing.
Whipped Cream: Canned spray whipped cream or a large bowl of homemade or tub whipped cream.
Toppings Bar:
Chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips.
Rainbow and chocolate sprinkles.
Toasted coconut flakes.
Chopped almonds (be mindful of allergies and dental needs).
Chocolate and caramel syrup in squeeze bottles.
A bowl of lightly sweetened, mashed strawberries for a sauce.
Supplies:
Disposable tablecloths for easy cleanup.
Plates, forks, and napkins for each resident.
Small bowls for holding toppings.
Serving spoons for each topping bowl.
Plastic or butter knives for residents to spread toppings and slice soft strawberries.
Cutting boards (if residents will be slicing strawberries).
Aprons for residents (optional, but recommended).
A small prize for the winning team (e.g., a "Golden Whisk" certificate or bragging rights).
A small bell or whistle to start and end the decorating time.
Hand wipes or access to a handwashing station.
