Residents gather to touch and feel a variety of soft, textured items (fabric swatches, pom-poms, smooth stones) while a amazon alexa reads a short, calming story or poem. The tactile experience combined with gentle narration can evoke pleasant memories and provide sensory stimulation.

Purpose of the Activity

This activity is designed to provide a gentle and soothing experience for residents in memory care. By engaging the senses of touch and hearing simultaneously, Sensory Story Time aims to reduce anxiety, stimulate positive memories, and offer a moment of calm connection. It provides a non-demanding way for residents to engage with their environment and with others in a safe, comfortable group setting. The combination of textures and narration can be grounding and help residents feel more present and relaxed.

Materials Needed

- Audio Device: An Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or any device capable of playing audiobooks or music (like a tablet or CD player).
- Audio Content: A pre-selected short story, poem, or calming soundscape. Look for options with a gentle narrator and a positive theme.
- Sensory Items: A collection of clean, safe, and interesting items with a variety of textures. All items should be large enough to not pose a choking hazard. Examples include:
- Soft fabric swatches (velvet, faux fur, silk, fleece, corduroy)
- Large, colorful pom-poms
- Smooth, polished river stones
- Soft, chunky yarn balls
- Large, smooth seashells
- Fuzzy pipe cleaners (with sharp ends tucked in or removed)
- Soft-bristled brushes
- Textured stress balls or beanbags
- Containers: A shallow basket or tray for each resident, or one or two larger trays to be passed around the group.
- Seating: Comfortable chairs for all participants.
- Optional: Hand sanitizer or wipes for before and after the activity.

Estimated Duration

15 to 30 minutes. The length should be tailored to the group's attention span on any given day. It is better to end on a positive note than to continue for too long.

Ideal Group Size

3 to 8 residents. A small group size fosters a calm atmosphere and allows you to provide personalized attention to each resident.
