Brief Overview

Prepare for our grand celebration by exploring the aromatic spices and foods of Egypt. Residents will be invited to safely smell fragrant spices like cinnamon, cumin, and mint, sparking conversation about favorite foods and building anticipation for our upcoming Egyptian feast.

Purpose of the Activity

This sensory activity is designed to gently stimulate the senses of smell and touch, which are powerfully linked to memory. The goal is to provide a calm and engaging experience that encourages reminiscence, sparks social interaction, and builds positive anticipation for a future event. It offers residents a successful and failure-free way to connect with the world around them, with each other, and with their own personal histories.

Materials Needed

Small, clear containers with lids: One for each spice. Mason jars, spice jars, or clear plastic containers work well. Ensure they are easy for you to open and close but secure enough to prevent spills.
A selection of aromatic, whole spices: Using whole spices (not ground powder) is safer and provides a visual and tactile element. Consider the following:
Cinnamon sticks
Whole cloves
Star anise
Cumin seeds
Dried mint leaves
Cardamom pods
Dried rosebuds or petals
Large-print labels: For each container.
Picture cards (optional): Simple, clear images of the spices, the plants they come from, or foods they are used in (e.g., a picture of a cinnamon roll, a cup of mint tea).
A decorative tray or basket: To present the spice containers.
Calming background music (optional): Instrumental music with an Egyptian or Middle Eastern feel, played at a low volume.
Hand wipes: For residents who wish to touch the spices.
