Residents will use pre-cut pictures of flowers, sunny landscapes, butterflies, and other cheerful nature elements, along with fabric scraps or textured paper in bright colors, to create individual or group collages on sturdy paper. This encourages fine motor skills, visual recognition, and positive associations with nature and warmth.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide a joyful and calming creative outlet for residents in memory care. The primary goals are to:
- Provide Sensory Stimulation: Engaging the senses of sight and touch with vibrant colors, varied images, and different textures of paper and fabric.
- Support Cognitive Function: Encouraging simple decision-making, such as choosing an image or deciding where to place it. The activity can also spark positive memories and conversation.
- Maintain Fine Motor Skills: Practicing hand-eye coordination and dexterity by picking up and placing collage pieces.
- Promote Emotional Well-being: Fostering a sense of accomplishment, purpose, and self-expression in a failure-free environment. The cheerful nature theme can elevate mood and reduce anxiety.
- Encourage Social Interaction: Creating a shared experience where residents can interact with staff and peers, comment on each other's work, and engage in gentle conversation.
Materials Needed
- Base Paper: Sturdy cardstock or construction paper (8.5x11 inches or larger), preferably in light colors like yellow, sky blue, or white.
- Pre-Cut Images: A large assortment of pictures cut from magazines, calendars, or printed from the internet. Images should be large and easy to handle. Good themes include:
- Flowers of all kinds (sunflowers, daisies, roses)
- Butterflies, ladybugs, and birds
- Bright, sunny landscapes
- Smiling sun illustrations
- Textured Embellishments: An assortment of items for tactile interest, such as:
- Fabric scraps in bright colors (felt, cotton, burlap)
- Textured paper (crepe paper, tissue paper, scrapbook paper)
- Pieces of ribbon or yarn
- Adhesives: Non-toxic glue sticks are highly recommended for ease of use and minimal mess. Alternatively, use small dishes of white school glue with brushes.
- Tools and Supplies:
- A completed example collage to show residents.
- Protective table coverings.
- Damp cloths or wipes for sticky fingers.
- Optional Items: Large, simple stickers (flowers, insects), or glitter glue for staff to add a final touch.
Estimated Duration
30-45 minutes. Be flexible and sensitive to the residents' energy levels. It is better to have a short, happy activity than a long, frustrating one.
Ideal Group Size
4-6 residents per staff member. This small ratio ensures that each person can receive the individual attention and assistance they may need to participate successfully.
