Brief Overview

Residents take turns rolling a die and moving their marker on a game board that features spaces with simple words or pictures. The goal is to be the first to land on a "rhyme time" space and correctly identify a rhyming word, encouraging verbal interaction and light cognitive recall in a turn-based, luck-driven format.

Purpose of the Activity

This game is designed to provide a fun, low-stress social opportunity that stimulates cognitive function. The primary goals are to encourage verbal expression, practice word retrieval and association, and engage in lighthearted group interaction. The turn-based nature of the game promotes patience and social courtesy, while the element of luck keeps the game accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of cognitive level.

Materials Needed

- Game Board: A large, handmade or printed game board with a clear path from "Start" to "Finish". Spaces should be big enough to write a word or place a picture. Designate a few special spaces as "Rhyme Time".
- Word/Picture Cards: A set of simple, large-print words or clear pictures to place on the game board spaces (e.g., CAT, SUN, BOOK, TREE, HOUSE).
- Player Markers: At least 4-8 distinct game pieces, such as different colored bottle caps, large buttons, or small figurines.
- Large Die: A single large foam or plastic die that is easy to see and handle.
- Facilitator's Rhyme Sheet: A list of the words on the board with several rhyming options for each, to help you provide prompts if a resident gets stuck.
- Optional: Small, simple prizes for the winner or for all participants (e.g., a piece of candy, a sticker, a certificate).
