Residents will choose a famous Route 66 landmark (like the Grand Canyon, Cadillac Ranch, or a vintage motel sign) and create their own "postcard." They can either draw or collage the image on one side, and on the other, write a short message sharing a memory, an imagined experience, or a fun fact about that particular stop along the Mother Road.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to spark reminiscence, encourage creative expression, and foster social connection among residents. By focusing on the iconic Route 66, it taps into themes of travel, history, and American culture that may be familiar and meaningful. The creative process supports fine motor skills and cognitive function, while the storytelling component promotes verbal communication and a sense of shared experience.
Materials Needed
Cardstock: Pre-cut into postcard size (e.g., 4x6 or 5x7 inches). Draw a line down the middle of one side to mimic a real postcard.
Visual Aids: A large map of Route 66 and plenty of large, color photographs of famous landmarks, cars, and scenery from the route's history. Laminated photos work well.
Art Supplies:
Colored pencils, crayons, and markers.
Magazines with travel photos, vintage ads, or colorful images for collaging.
Safety scissors and glue sticks.
Pre-cut collage shapes or images for residents with limited dexterity.
Writing Tools: Large-grip pens and dark-ink pens for easy writing.
Optional: A playlist of music from the 1950s and 1960s, a projector to display images of Route 66, and fun facts about the "Mother Road" printed in large font.
