I would like to make an activity that would last for one hour. I want it to be centered around "Dia de Los Muertos" Day of the Dead. I want to include history, cultural education, mexican hot chocolate, mexican music and making tissue paper marigolds.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide a rich cultural and sensory experience for residents. The purpose is to educate participants on the beautiful traditions of Dia de Los Muertos, fostering an appreciation for different cultures. It encourages socialization, stimulates the senses through music and refreshments, and engages fine motor skills with a simple, rewarding craft. The activity focuses on celebrating life and honoring the memory of loved ones in a joyful, positive way.
Materials Needed
For the Tissue Paper Marigolds:
Orange and yellow tissue paper, pre-cut into 6x6 inch or 8x8 inch squares
Green pipe cleaners, one per resident
Scissors (for staff use, or safety scissors for residents if appropriate)
For Atmosphere and Education:
A speaker to play music
A pre-selected playlist of gentle, instrumental Mexican folk or classical guitar music
A short, large-print handout or a script with information about the history and meaning of Dia de Los Muertos
Optional: A few printed photos of traditional ofrendas (altars), sugar skulls, and marigolds to use as visual aids
For Refreshments:
A slow cooker or pot for heating
Milk (or a non-dairy alternative)
Tablets of Mexican chocolate (such as Abuelita or Ibarra brands)
Cinnamon sticks and a whisk
Small, easy-to-hold mugs or paper cups for serving
Napkins
