Build cork sailboats and float them in water! These cork sailboats are enjoyable to assemble and launch on the water. The craft combines corks, skewers, and vibrant paper to make miniature boats. They can be displayed in bowls of water or used for sailboat races powered by straws. It’s a sensory-friendly activity that can be easily adapted for memory care.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide a sense of purpose and accomplishment through a simple, hands-on project. It promotes fine motor skills, encourages creative expression, and can spark fond memories related to water, boating, and summertime. The sensory elements of building the boat and then placing it in water offer a calming and engaging experience for residents of all ability levels.
Materials Needed
Corks: Natural or synthetic wine corks work well. Plan for three corks per boat.
Wooden Skewers: Standard 10- or 12-inch skewers.
Colorful Paper: Construction paper, scrapbook paper, or cardstock in various colors.
Scissors: Both standard and adaptive or safety scissors.
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks: For staff use only, to create sturdy boat bases.
Waterproof Markers or Crayons: For decorating sails.
Stickers: An optional, easy way to add flair.
Large, Shallow Bins or Bowls of Water: To serve as a "lake" for the boats. A water table is also an excellent option.
Drinking Straws: For sailboat races.
Towels: For any spills and for drying hands.
Estimated Duration
45 to 60 minutes. This provides ample time for crafting, conversation, and the water-play portion of the activity without feeling rushed.
Ideal Group Size
4 to 8 residents. A smaller group ensures that staff can provide one-on-one assistance where needed and fosters a more intimate, conversational atmosphere.
