Get the creativity and participation flowing with a turtle shell weaving activity tailored for senior living programs. This engaging craft supports fine motor skills, concentration, and social interaction as participants work on a nature-inspired project together. It’s well suited for mixed-ability groups and fits seamlessly into aged care environments.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity provides a wonderful opportunity for creative expression while delivering multiple therapeutic benefits. The simple, repetitive motion of weaving can be calming and meditative, helping to reduce stress. It supports cognitive function by requiring participants to follow steps and concentrate on a pattern. Physically, it enhances hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. Socially, it creates a relaxed, shared experience that encourages conversation and a sense of community. Completing the project provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and pride.
Materials Needed
Turtle Shell Base: Sturdy cardboard (from shipping boxes or craft sheets), cut into turtle shapes approximately 6-8 inches long.
Yarn: A variety of colors and textures. Earth tones like green, brown, and tan work well, but bright colors can be just as fun. Chunky yarn is easier for some individuals to handle.
Scissors: Both staff scissors for cutting cardboard and safety scissors for residents to cut yarn.
Hole Punch or Craft Knife: For creating the notches around the shell (staff use only).
Pencil or Marker: For tracing the turtle template onto cardboard.
Optional Decorations: Googly eyes, beads, buttons, or felt shapes.
Optional Adhesive: Non-toxic white craft glue or glue dots.
Turtle Template: A simple printed or hand-drawn turtle shape to ensure consistency.
Estimated Duration
45 to 60 minutes. The activity can also be broken into two shorter sessions if needed.
Ideal Group Size
4 to 8 participants per staff member. This size allows for individual attention and assistance while still promoting social interaction.
