Family is central to Spanish culture. This session focuses on vocabulary for family members like 'madre,' 'padre,' 'abuelo,' and 'hija.' Residents will be invited to share about their own families using the simple Spanish phrases they are learning.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to create a warm, emotionally supportive environment where residents can connect with one another through shared experiences of family. By learning simple Spanish vocabulary, residents engage in gentle cognitive exercise while also opening a door to reminisce and share meaningful stories. The primary goals are to foster a sense of community, validate personal histories, and provide a comfortable space for emotional expression.
Materials Needed
- Whiteboard or Large Flip Chart: To write the Spanish vocabulary words clearly for everyone to see.
- Dry-Erase Markers or Chart Markers: Use multiple colors to make the words stand out.
- Handout: A simple, large-print handout with the Spanish words and their English translations for each resident.
- Name Tags: Optional, but helpful for creating a friendly atmosphere.
- Photos: Encourage residents in advance to bring a family photo they would like to share. This is optional and should not be a requirement.
- Spanish or Latin American Music: Gentle background music to play as residents arrive and during quiet moments.
