Honor the resilience and spirit of the WWII era through music and memory. Listen to the iconic sounds of Glenn Miller and the Andrews Sisters, view classic patriotic posters, and create a space for sharing personal or family stories from the home front.
Purpose of the activity
This activity is designed to create a powerful and validating experience for residents by tapping into the profound memories of the World War II era. The primary goals are to foster a sense of community through shared history, honor the life experiences and contributions of the "Greatest Generation," and provide a supportive environment for reminiscence. By engaging with the music, images, and stories of the time, we encourage emotional expression, strengthen social bonds, and reinforce a sense of identity and pride among residents.
Materials needed
- A music player with good quality speakers.
- A curated playlist of 1940s music (e.g., Glenn Miller, The Andrews Sisters, Vera Lynn, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra).
- A projector and screen, large television, or a collection of large, printed WWII-era posters and photographs (e.g., Rosie the Riveter, "Buy War Bonds" posters, images of Victory Gardens).
- Comfortable chairs arranged in a circle or semi-circle to facilitate conversation.
- A microphone, if the group is large or includes soft-spoken residents.
- Optional: Refreshments such as coffee, tea, and simple baked goods.
- Optional: A "talking piece," such as a small flag or decorative object, to pass to the person whose turn it is to speak.
- Optional: A box of tissues, as discussions may evoke strong emotions.
Estimated duration
45 to 60 minutes for the main activity, with an additional 15 to 20 minutes for refreshments and informal conversation afterward.
