Each resident receives a small pot, soil, and a packet of easy-to-grow herb seeds (like basil or mint). They can decorate their pots and plant their seeds, chatting with their neighbors about their gardening experiences and the herbs they plan to grow. This hands-on activity encourages social interaction and provides a lasting sense of accomplishment.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to be more than just a craft; it's a multi-faceted experience that:
Encourages Social Interaction: Provides a relaxed, friendly setting for residents to connect and share stories.
Promotes a Sense of Purpose: Caring for a living plant gives residents a rewarding daily responsibility and something to look forward to.
Stimulates the Senses: Engages touch (soil, pot), smell (herbs, earth), and sight (colors, growing plant).
Supports Fine Motor Skills: Scooping soil, handling small seeds, and painting pots helps maintain dexterity.
Sparks Memories and Conversation: The topic of gardening often brings up pleasant memories of past homes, family members, and favorite recipes.
Brings Nature Indoors: Offers a connection to the natural world, which is especially beneficial for residents with limited mobility.
