Residents can share personal stories, memories, and anecdotes from their lives, which are then recorded (audio or video, with permission). This creates a living archive of their experiences, fostering connection and preserving their unique histories for future generations or internal community sharing.
Purpose of the Activity
The "Story Weavers" project is more than just an activity; it's an opportunity to honor and celebrate the rich life experiences of each resident. The primary goals are to:
Validate and Empower: Provide a platform for residents to see their life stories as valuable and important.
Foster Connection: Build deeper relationships between residents and staff, and among residents themselves, as they learn about each other's journeys.
Stimulate Cognition: Encourage memory recall and cognitive engagement in a meaningful and enjoyable way.
Create a Legacy: Produce a priceless keepsake for residents and their families, preserving their voice and memories for generations to come.
Build Community History: Weave individual stories together to create a rich tapestry of your community's collective history.
Materials Needed
Recording Device: A smartphone, tablet, or digital audio recorder. A laptop with a webcam also works well.
Tripod/Stand (Recommended): To keep the recording device steady for video.
External Microphone (Optional but Recommended): A simple lapel or tabletop microphone can drastically improve audio quality.
Consent & Release Forms: A simple, clear form that explains how the recordings will be used (e.g., internal archive, shared with family, community newsletter) and asks for the resident's permission.
Quiet & Comfortable Space: A private room, a quiet corner of the library, or a resident's apartment.
Comfort Items: Two comfortable chairs, a small table, and a pitcher of water with glasses.
Story Prompt List: A prepared list of open-ended questions (see "Tips for Engagement" below).
Notebook and Pen: For taking notes on key names, dates, or topics to revisit.
Digital Storage: A dedicated folder on a secure computer, an external hard drive, or a private cloud storage account (like Google Drive or a private YouTube channel) to save the final files.
Estimated Duration
Individual Session: 30-60 minutes (Be mindful of the resident's energy level).
Project Timeline: This is an ongoing project that can continue indefinitely as new residents join the community or existing residents feel ready to share more stories.
Ideal Group Size
Recording Session: 1-on-1 (one staff member, one resident) is ideal for creating a comfortable atmosphere and ensuring high-quality audio.
