Residents are each given a unique, intriguing image or a single provocative sentence. They then take turns adding a sentence or two to collectively weave a spontaneous, collaborative short story, building on each other's contributions. This encourages imagination, listening, and shared storytelling.

Purpose of the Activity

This activity is designed to be a joyful and engaging experience that stimulates the mind and strengthens social bonds. The main goals are to:
Spark imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills in a fun, low-pressure setting.
Encourage active listening and collaboration as residents build upon each other's ideas.
Foster a sense of community and shared accomplishment by creating something together.
Provide a wonderful outlet for self-expression, humor, and personal storytelling.
Boost cognitive function by exercising memory and verbal fluency.

Materials Needed

Story Starters: A collection of prompts. You only need one type per session.
Image Cards: Around 20-30 evocative pictures cut from magazines, old calendars, or printed from the internet. Choose images that are interesting and open to interpretation (e.g., a winding path in a forest, an old-fashioned telephone, a single red balloon against a grey sky).
Sentence Strips: Slips of paper with a single intriguing sentence written on each. Place these in a small bowl or hat. Examples: "The librarian whispered that the book was forbidden," or "He found the old map in the pocket of a coat he had not worn in years."
Talking Object (Optional): A small, soft ball, a decorative stone, or a "talking stick" to clearly indicate whose turn it is to speak.
Recording Tools (Optional but Recommended): A large whiteboard with markers or a flip chart with a pen to write down the story as it unfolds. A staff member or resident volunteer can act as the scribe.
Seating: Comfortable chairs for all participants.
