January 19th is National popcorn day. I would like to do a craft for about an hour using the popcorn to cover or fill in already
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide a multi-sensory experience that is both calming and engaging. The primary goals are to stimulate memories and conversation through the familiar smell and taste of popcorn, encourage fine motor skill practice by handling the pieces, and provide a sense of accomplishment and pride as residents create their own artwork. It fosters social connection in a joyful, low-pressure setting.
Materials Needed
Plain, air-popped popcorn (make plenty; it is the art medium and a snack!)
A separate, clearly marked bowl of popcorn for snacking (lightly salted or buttered, per dietary needs)
Sturdy paper or cardstock with simple, bold-lined templates printed on them (e.g., a cloud, a sheep, a popcorn box, a large single popcorn kernel)
Non-toxic white school glue
Small, shallow dishes or cups to hold glue
Paintbrushes, cotton swabs, or craft sticks for spreading glue
Protective tablecloths or newspaper for work surfaces
Wet wipes or damp washcloths for easy cleanup of sticky fingers
Optional: Markers or crayons for residents to decorate the background
Optional: Food coloring and sealable plastic bags to dye some of the popcorn in advance for colorful art
Estimated Duration
Total: 45-60 minutes
Setup and Welcome: 10 minutes
Crafting Time: 30-40 minutes
Cleanup and Wind-Down: 5-10 minutes
Ideal Group Size
For a memory care setting, an ideal group size is 4 to 6 residents per one staff member or volunteer. This allows for personalized attention and support, ensuring everyone feels included and successful.
