To celebrate Grandparents Day, we are asking all of our independent living residents to submit an old family recipe. We are then going to create a cookbook and will feature 4 of teh recipes in our dining room.

Purpose of the Activity

This project is designed to celebrate the rich histories and family traditions of our residents. By creating a community cookbook, we aim to foster a deeper sense of connection, encourage storytelling, and create a cherished keepsake for residents and their families. It provides a wonderful opportunity for residents to share a piece of their heritage, feel a sense of pride and contribution, and engage with their neighbors in a meaningful way.

Materials Needed

For Promotion:
Promotional flyers and posters for community bulletin boards.
Content for the community newsletter and resident portal.
A slide for the in-house television channel.

For Recipe Submission:
Standardized recipe submission forms (ask for name, recipe title, ingredients, instructions, and an optional short story or memory about the recipe).
A decorated and clearly labeled submission box placed in a high-traffic area.
Pens readily available near the forms and submission box.

For Cookbook Creation:
A computer with word processing or design software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Canva, Publisher).
A scanner to digitize handwritten recipes or old photos, if desired.
A plan for printing and binding (either in-house with quality paper and a binding machine, or through a local or online printing service).

For the Tasting Event:
Collaboration with the culinary team to source ingredients for the four featured recipes.
Serving dishes, plates, napkins, and utensils.
Small, elegant signs to place by each featured dish, noting the recipe title and the name of the resident who submitted it.
Dining room decorations to create a festive atmosphere.

Estimated Duration

Submission Period: 3 to 4 weeks.
Cookbook Design and Printing: 2 weeks.
Tasting Event: 2 hours for a special lunch or dinner service.

Ideal Group Size

This is a community-wide activity, so all residents are encouraged to submit a recipe. The tasting event can accommodate the full capacity of your dining room. For smaller spin-off activities like a recipe workshop, a group of 10-20 residents is ideal.
