Purpose of the activity
The Sunday Hymn Sing is designed to provide spiritual comfort and a sense of community for residents. Music, especially familiar hymns, can evoke powerful memories and positive emotions. This activity supports residents' spiritual well-being, encourages social interaction, and offers the cognitive and mood-boosting benefits of group singing. It creates a calm, reflective, and joyful atmosphere to begin the week.
Materials needed
- Large-print hymn books or pre-printed lyric sheets for each resident.
- A reliable music source. This could be a staff member or volunteer who plays the piano or guitar, or a high-quality speaker with a playlist of instrumental hymn accompaniments.
- A list of 10-15 well-known, popular hymns to ensure a smooth start.
- A whiteboard or large flip chart with markers to write down song requests.
- A microphone for the activity leader, especially in a larger room or with residents who are hard of hearing.
- Optional: A pitcher of water and cups.
- Optional: Light refreshments for after the activity, such as coffee, tea, juice, and small cookies or pastries.
Estimated duration
45 to 60 minutes. This is long enough to sing several songs and enjoy social time without causing fatigue.
Ideal group size
10 to 20 residents. This range is large enough to create a full and encouraging sound while remaining small enough to feel intimate and allow for everyone's request to be heard.
