An activity for senior veterans to dedicate a new American and POW Flags for our flagpole outside our facility. Maybe have a trumpet player play taps for those we have lost to the war.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity provides a meaningful and spiritual opportunity for residents, particularly veterans, to come together and honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's military personnel. The ceremony fosters a sense of patriotism, community, and remembrance. It gives resident veterans a place of honor and allows them to lead the community in a tribute that is deeply personal and significant to them.
Materials Needed
Flags: A new, properly sized American Flag and a new POW/MIA Flag.
Musician: A trumpet or bugle player to perform "Taps." (Contact local high schools, VFW posts, or community bands).
Backup Music: A high-quality recording of "Taps" and the National Anthem, just in case.
Sound System: A portable microphone and speaker to ensure all residents can hear the ceremony.
Ceremony Programs: Printed programs outlining the order of events, song lyrics, and perhaps the names of resident veterans.
Seating: Ample chairs for all attending residents, arranged with clear pathways for walkers and wheelchairs.
Presentation Table: A small table draped with a cloth to hold the new, folded flags before they are raised.
Refreshments: Simple refreshments for a social gathering afterward (e.g., lemonade, iced tea, patriotic-themed cookies).
Small American Flags (Optional): Handheld flags for residents to hold during the ceremony.
Reserved Seating Signs: To designate a front-row area for participating veterans.
