Set up a simple "path" using colorful pool noodles or soft fabric strips on the floor. Residents are encouraged to "walk" or "roll" (if in wheelchairs) along the path, perhaps stopping at designated "stations" to gently toss a soft beach ball into a basket or "swim" their arms through the air. This activity encourages ambulation, propelling wheelchairs, and arm movements in a relaxed, imaginative setting.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide gentle physical exercise and sensory stimulation in a fun, imaginative way. It aims to promote gross motor skills, including walking, balance, and wheelchair mobility. The activity also encourages upper body movement, range of motion, and hand-eye coordination. By incorporating a beach theme, it can spark positive memories, encourage social interaction, and improve mood.
Materials Needed
For the Path: 4-6 colorful pool noodles or long strips of blue and tan fabric.
For Safety: Gaffer's tape or another floor-safe tape to secure the path materials.
For Stations: 2-3 lightweight, soft beach balls and 2-3 laundry baskets or large buckets.
For Ambiance: A portable speaker to play beach-themed music (e.g., sounds of ocean waves, songs by The Beach Boys).
Optional Decorations: Beach towels, sunglasses, sun hats, seashells, or inflatable palm trees to enhance the theme.
Optional Sensory Items: A spray bottle with water for a light "sea mist" or coconut-scented lotion for hand massages after the activity.
Estimated Duration
30-45 minutes
Ideal Group Size
4-8 residents. A smaller group size allows for more one-on-one attention and ensures safety during the physical components of the activity.
