Explore the beautiful contrasts of Japan, from bustling Tokyo to serene temples and gardens. We'll view a slideshow of famous landmarks, try our hand at a simple origami craft, and enjoy a guided discussion about Japanese traditions and art.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide a multi-sensory and engaging cultural experience. It aims to stimulate residents' minds by introducing them to the geography, art, and traditions of Japan. The slideshow offers visual stimulation and a chance for armchair travel, while the origami craft provides a gentle challenge for fine motor skills and creative expression. The group discussion encourages social interaction, reminiscence, and the sharing of personal travel experiences or knowledge.
Materials Needed
For the Slideshow:
Laptop or computer
Projector and screen, or a large television with connection cables
A pre-made slideshow of high-quality images of Japan. Include landmarks like Mount Fuji, Tokyo's Shibuya Crossing, Kyoto's temples (like Kinkaku-ji), Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and images of Japanese gardens, cuisine (sushi, ramen), and cultural elements (kimonos, sumo wrestling).
Optional: A speaker for playing gentle, traditional Japanese music (like Koto or Shakuhachi music) in the background.
For the Origami Craft:
Origami paper in various colors and patterns (6x6 inch squares are standard).
Instruction sheets with large, clear diagrams for a simple origami model (e.g., a crane, a simple box, a flower like a tulip, or a fan). Print one for each resident or a few to share per table.
A few pre-made examples of the finished origami craft for residents to see.
A flat, well-lit surface for each resident to work on.
For the Discussion:
A list of discussion prompts (see "Tips for Engagement" section).
Optional: Japanese picture books, art prints (like Hokusai's "The Great Wave"), or physical objects like a fan, a tea set, or a kimono to pass around.
Estimated Duration
60 minutes
Ideal Group Size
5 to 15 residents. This size is small enough to ensure everyone can receive individual assistance with the craft and have a chance to participate in the discussion.
