TypePhysical
Level of careIndependent Living
Residents will participate in a series of fun challenges involving tossing beanbags to different targets placed at varying distances and heights. This activity will subtly improve balance, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills as they aim and move to retrieve their beanbags.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to be more than just a simple game. It combines physical movement with cognitive focus in a lighthearted, social setting. The primary goals are to:
Enhance Physical Skills: Improve balance, hand-eye coordination, core strength, and agility as residents reach, throw, bend, and walk.
Boost Cognitive Function: Encourage focus, concentration, and strategic thinking as residents aim for different targets.
Promote Social Interaction: Create a fun, supportive atmosphere for friendly competition, laughter, and conversation among residents.
Increase Confidence: Provide a sense of accomplishment and success, regardless of physical ability.
Materials Needed
Beanbags: 12-15 beanbags, preferably in a few different colors to assign to teams or individuals.
Targets (A variety is best!):
2-3 Hula hoops
2-3 Laundry baskets, buckets, or large bowls
1-2 Large cardboard boxes with holes of different sizes cut out (e.g., a large circle worth 10 points, a smaller square worth 20).
A few brightly colored cones or markers.
Markers for Throwing Line: Masking tape (for indoors), chalk (for outdoors), or a small rope.
Scoreboard (Optional): A whiteboard or large easel pad with a marker to keep score and build excitement.
Music Player & Playlist: Upbeat, familiar music from the 40s, 50s, or 60s.
Chairs: Several chairs placed around the activity area for residents who need to sit between turns or prefer to participate while seated.
Water Station: A small table with a pitcher of water and cups for hydration.
Estimated Duration
Total Time: Approximately 60 minutes
Setup: 10-15 minutes
Activity & Gameplay: 40-45 minutes
Cleanup: 5 minutes
Ideal Group Size
6 to 12 participants: This is the sweet spot. It keeps the game moving so no one has to wait too long for their turn, and it allows for good social interaction. For larger groups, consider running two games side-by-side or playing a team-based version.
