Uncover the potential for life packed inside a single seed. Each resident will receive a pre-soaked bean to carefully dissect, identifying the tiny plant embryo within. We will then start our own germination project, planting a seed in a clear cup to watch it sprout over the coming week.

Purpose of the Activity

This activity is designed to spark curiosity and a sense of wonder about the natural world. It provides a gentle, hands-on experience that stimulates the mind and the senses. Key benefits include:

- Cognitive Engagement: Encourages observation, critical thinking, and learning about plant life cycles.
- Fine Motor Skills: The delicate tasks of handling and dissecting the seed provide excellent practice for hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
- Reminiscence: Sparks conversations and memories about past gardening experiences, favorite plants, and cooking.
- Sense of Purpose: Caring for the sprouting seed provides a simple, rewarding daily responsibility and a visible result of one's effort.
- Social Connection: Creates a shared experience for residents to discuss and observe their projects together over the following days.

Materials Needed

- For Dissection: Large dried beans (lima or kidney beans work well), soaked in water for 12-24 hours. Plan for 2-3 beans per participant.
- For Planting: Dried beans that have not been soaked.
- Tools: Magnifying glasses (one per participant if possible), small disposable plates or trays, and optional plastic tweezers for those who prefer them.
- Containers: Clear plastic cups (one per participant).
- Growing Medium: Cotton balls or folded paper towels.
- Water: A small pitcher or spray bottle for watering.
- Visual Aid: A large, clear diagram of the parts of a bean seed (cotyledon, embryo, seed coat). You can find these easily online and print them.
- Labeling: Permanent markers and masking tape or stickers for labeling cups with names.

Estimated Duration
