Grab your binoculars for a virtual African safari across Kenya's Maasai Mara. Residents will delight in a slideshow of the 'Big Five' animals, listen to the sounds of the savanna, and participate in a fun trivia game about African wildlife.
Purpose of the Activity
This activity is designed to provide a multi-sensory and engaging experience that transports residents to the plains of Africa. It aims to stimulate cognitively through learning and trivia, encourage social interaction through shared discussion, and enhance mood by offering a fun and fascinating escape. The theme can also spark reminiscence about travel, nature documentaries, or visits to the zoo.
Materials Needed
Technology: A large-screen television or a projector and screen, a computer or laptop with internet access, and speakers for sound.
Visuals: A pre-made slideshow of high-quality photographs of Kenyan wildlife. Focus on the 'Big Five' (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, Cape buffalo) but also include giraffes, zebras, hippos, cheetahs, and colorful birds. Alternatively, a curated nature video from a source like YouTube can be used.
Audio: A pre-loaded audio track or playlist of African savanna ambient sounds.
Props: Safari hats and binoculars for residents (toy versions or simple crafts made from cardboard tubes work wonderfully). A large world map or globe to show the location of Kenya.
Handouts: Large-print copies of a wildlife trivia quiz. Prepare an answer key for the activity leader.
Prizes: Small, fun prizes for the trivia game, such as animal crackers or small animal figurines.
Optional Refreshments: A themed snack and drink, such as tropical fruit punch ("Jungle Juice") and animal-shaped cookies.
Estimated Duration
45 to 60 minutes
Ideal Group Size
5 to 15 residents. This size is large enough to feel like a group event but small enough to allow for individual participation and good visibility for everyone.
